Read The Backstory:
At 15 years old, I drew a picture of a woman in my poetry journal. She looks over her shoulder, a rose for an eye. It was an expression of femininity, something at the time I had to fight for the right to maintain.
Sometime later, on the opposite side of the page, I outlined the lines that bled through and drew in her skeleton with a purple marker. Now would be a good time to mention my love for skeletons.
I find skeletons to be an exquisite and surreal illustration of the human spirit.
While some may simply write them off as a try-hard-to-be-edgy staple of alternative culture, to me, they mean so much more.
A skeleton stands as a representation of us all, regardless of gender, age, race, or any other exclusivities. Not only that, they represent our mortality, a reminder of the importance of our spirituality. Who are you on the inside? Because one day, for us all, the outside will wither away.
Now back to the backstory;
Two years ahead in time, I am now 17 years old. The poetry journal, along with others, stays in the backseat floorboard of my 2002 Chevy pickup truck, also at that time known as my home.
Along with the journal, I kept all of my belongings back there, as well as some jugs of water, essential to the daily routine of life.
my whole life's worth tucked away in an extended cab as I ventured out alone into this cold world to find survival.
Amidst the chaos of teenage homelessness, I find there had been an accident. One of the water jugs had broken open and spilled, leaving my vulnerable poetry journal soaking wet and all splotched out.
What a disaster.
My heart broke as I flipped through the pages, teary-eyed. “Can I not keep any innocent thing? May at least some sentimental thing survive this hard time?” I think to myself.
But then I saw her.
The purple marker bled through from the other page. The woman with the rose eye, became one with the other side. Her penned in lines stand firm while her skeleton shines through like an x-ray.
Looking at her, I realize the art isn't ruined. No, now the art is running deeper.
I sketched it out and life filled it in.
I decided this is what Ross would call a happy accident.
Right when I believed it was all ruined, she became my most significant work of art. Now not only is she a drawing, she has a story as well.
The perfect balance between
life and death, intention and error,
beauty and pain. I hear God whisper to me that I'm within the same process.
I call her “La Poesía.”
Let her be the example;
You are not what happens to you.
You are who you choose to become.
